Getting a Copy of the Pastor's Pick for the Month

The Pastor's Pick for February is A Cross-shaped Gospel by Bryan Loritts. We recently were blessed watching Bryan's message to the 2011 Pastors' Conference during our Sunday evening bible study time. This book is a challenging, thought provoking look at how the Gospel should change our relationships and life. The book cover gives this caution: "Warning! Could make your life messy!" That is certainly true.   I am grateful to one of Cabot neighbors for helping us purchase the... Read More

Pastor's Picks Reading List

Pastor's Picks is a new reading plan that I am excited to present to FBC. Each month I will announce a book - the Pastor's Pick - that I will be reading that month. Then I will schedule a discussion group to give everyone who is interested an opportunity to sit down with me and the others who read the Pastor's Pick to evaluate and discuss the book. Typically, we will schedule our discussion group on the first Sunday afternoon of each month for an hour and a half or so. I will send out a set of... Read More

ASK: Follow Up to Sunday's Question

This past Sunday I addressed the question "Why is the modern church so ineffective?" The answer is, in a nutshell, that we have lost the passion and sense of mission that comes from a true, Christlike passion for reaching people with the Gospel. I would like to take that thought a step further. The passion for reaching people carries us much farther than just the amount of baptizing that we do. It in fact drives the level of discipleship we see in the church today. Simply put, if you are driven... Read More

Reasons?   •          poor discipleship •          materialism in America •          lost the heart of worship •          poor leadership •          inadequate church planting We should behave in a radically different way based on an individual passion for evangelism!   Evangelistic passion is rooted: in the power of God's redeeming love.     “The love of Christ compels us.” ... Ask - Why don't we have a fellowship time during the service?

Today's question is one that I have been asked a number of times: Why don't we have a fellowship time during the worship service? Although we have discussed this as a church several times, we are growing and have a number of new people who may not have benefotted from our prior discussions. The term "fellowship time" is actually an unfortunate misnomer. It really should be described by what it is - a few seconds of shaking hands. C. S. Lewis Quote

Something Beyond from Mere Christianity   "I think all Christians would agree with me if I said that though Christianity seems at the first to be all about morality, all about duties and rules and guilt and virture, yet it leads you on, out of all that, into someting beyond. One has a glimpse of a country where they do not talk of those things, except perhaps as a joke. Every one there is filled full with what we should call goodness as a mirror is filled with light. I want to call your attention to a blog that I follow which has an excellent analysis of the radical judicial ruling by a gay judge striking down California's voter passed Prop 8, which affirms protections for traditional marriage. The Goal of Our Preaching and Teaching

There is a deep and clear purpose to all  the Bible teaching and preaching at FBC - the redemptive work of Christ in the life of each and every hearer. It is my prayer that this is evident in all that I do both as a preacher and as the standard bearer for all those who teach the Bible here at FBC.   As is my custom, I am in he process of reading one of several books on preaching (I generally read 2-3 each year.). Legal Challenges to Prayer on the Rise

Jesus has commanded us to be salt and light. One of the great heritages of America is our freedom to freely express our faith and the gospel – salt and light. The Importance of Anticipating Jesus' Return

Another truth the nail has helped me with this week is the anticipation of Jesus' second coming. Paul teaches us that as we take the Lord's Supper we are proclaiming the Lord's death till He comes ." We should be waiting each day to see if today is the day that Jesus returns.   Anticipation can be difficult when our focus is distracted. Recently, my daughter went to New York City for her senior trip. She was gone for several days and it was quite an eventful trip. We were excited... Read More

Tangible Reminders Really Work

Once or twice I even forgot and left it on my desk and while I was away from it someone asked me if I was carrying my nail.   There is something about a tangible object or action which holds your attention. The Strength of the Promise to Forgive

Recently, I had an experience where I learned the power of knowing you will receive forgiveness. There was a fairly typical moment in life where I acted human and made a human mistake that impacted a friend. I knew that I would have to ask for forgiveness. It was not a life altering event - but it was significant enough that I felt there would be some impact on our relationship.   I was afraid that my friend might misinterpret my action that I did not truly love this special person whom... kerby's point of view - the spiritual battle for our children

A recent blog by Kerby Anderson Reads:   Most parents believe that their children's Christian faith really won't come under attack until they leave home for college. They have seen other kid's faith falter in college and naturally assume that the university environment is toxic to a Christian's faith. While the last part of that assumption may be true, the rest of these assumptions are false.    First, Christian young people begin to have doubts about their Christian faith long... Read More

How to Construct a Testimony

It is an important and basic skill for any Christian to be able to give a clear testimony of God at work in a personal and intimate way. The Bible tells us that we are to “let the word of God dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. “ Colossians 3:16. This admonition is repeated often in the New Testament, and pastors such as Timothy were instructed to teach this... Read More

Several years ago we adopted a specific plan for funding the upgrade and expansion of our facilities. We review this process annually... Read More

MOVE Weekend

I asked Drew to prepare a report about MOVE Weekend and here it is.....   MOVE…this simple word holds so much power and action.  Recently the student ministry here at First experienced our first Move Weekend, formally known as DNOW.  In all my years in ministry with students this weekend will stand out to me.  I was humbled as I watched God MOVE in the lives of our students.    As we kicked off the weekend on Thursday night, Carter Morris, our speaker, and Jared Wood, worship leader,... FBC's Children's Ministry Ranks in Top 10 in Baptisms

In this week's edition of the Arkansas Baptist Convention's weekly newspaper , The Arkansas Baptist News, FBC's Children's Ministry was ranked in the top 10 in baptisms for Arkansas churches that average over 500 in Sunday School. FBC ranked sixth in children's baptisms with 31 last year. That is quite a testimony to the efforts of our Children's Ministry staff led by PAstor Ron Pierce. What about Genesis Lab the television show?

Genesis Lab has been a dynamic addition to FBC's ministry strategy. It has significantly empowered our growth, appeal to families with children, aided us in baptizing more children, and many other areas of FBC ministry. It also sets FBC apart as Genesis Lab is our own invention and can only be found here at FBC. Virtually every child who enters Genesis Lab is taken up with the energy and teaching tools that are unique to Genesis Lab.     What if we could take Genesis Lab to them? Whether... Read More

Inner-city Church Plant in Little Rock

There is a strong encouragement amongst both church growth strategists and leaders in our Southern Baptist Convention towards church planting. New churches baptize at a faster rate than older, established churches. Additionally, there are many areas that simply do not have enough churches to truly impact that particular area. One of those types of ares is the inner city, usually because the needs of the area are so great that it takes a significant amount of resources to help people move into... Read More

Please Share Your Vision for FBC

On Sunday, we saw how God has designed the church to work by working through you. We talked about the strength of the church when the members come with a vision and passion for impacting people until they grow "to the full measure of the stature of Christ." Sunday I shared some visionary ideas I have had for FBC, but I would like to hear from you - after all that's why I am here - "to equip the saints [you] for the work of the ministry to the building of the body of Christ."   What... Some Helpful Hints for Your First Fast

Last week, we studied fasting in our First Look bible studies and Life groups. Most of our classes had great discussions about the experience of fasting. I have had a umber of people ask me about how to get started. Here are a few helpful pointers from my experience. First, start with a 24 hour fast. I have found the best time to do that is from supper to supper. Eat a small, healthy supper and then begin your fast. By the time you wake up, you are hungry and can feel the desire to eat. Thus,... Enjoy the Snow ... and the Lord

I hope everyone is enjoying some wonderful family time during the breaks caused by the ice and snow. It is fun to build snow men, make snow cream, snuggle by the fire, or play hours of non-stop Uno. Please enjoy this time with your family. Do not forget, however, that this is a great time for you to get alone with the Lord. The hectic pace of life is one of the major obstacles to deepening our walk with Jesus. Here is a prefect opportunity to spend some  time alone with the Lord.   ... Read More

Praise Report from our January Guatemala Mission Team

I have asked the members of our FBC that traveled to Guatemala in January to report on the results of their mission trip. I know you will be interested to read this testimony from Dick Avey, who led the team.   What an awesome God we serve!  And what a joy it was to join Him in the work He did in San Bernardino, Guatemala, January 9 – 16, 2010.  Alisa Spann, Susan Garoutte, and myself joined 8 other folks from Caroline Baptist Association in working along side of members of Mission... My Support for the Manhattan Declaration

This morning I chose to log onto the site for the Manhattan Declaration and sign my name to the document. If you are not aware of this important document, then you need to go to manhattandeclaration.org. This is a statement written by numerous leaders of the evangelical christian church, along with Roman Catholic leaders as well, to address with the significant movement in our culture to take us once and for all away from our Judeo-chrisitan heritage. It is also a call to action for christians... Read More
